About This Exhibition:

The Grange Gallery, Rottingdean is presenting the third in its series of acclaimed exhibitions on the life and work of members of the family of the celebrated artist William Nicholson, who lived there from 1910 – 1914. In 2022, William himself was the subject, followed in 2024 by his wife Mabel Pryde Nicholson – the first comprehensive exhibition of her paintings for more than a century. This summer, we are delighted to showcase the work of E.Q. Nicholson (William’s daughter-in-law) and, in particular, the paintings she produced in the 1940s, a remarkable decade when she lived at Alderholt Mill in Dorset. The exhibition shows some of her finest work from that period – the landscape and garden around the house and interiors with ceramics and flowers – joyful idiosyncratic depictions of the life in the English countryside.

In addition, we are including key works by the brilliant young painter John Craxton. For a while, he lived and painted alongside E.Q. at the mill, exploring landscape for the first time and embarking on his own impressive career that would earn him international distinction.
