The Windmill Update:
Following our posts advising of the planned major maintenance work on the Mill, we are pleased to give another update.
We now expect that on 8th June the signs and barriers around the windmill will go up and then the lorry to take the sweeps away should arrive on 9th June.
The Windmill will then be put in scaffolding for the work to continue. We are very aware that the Windmill is situated in a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest) with skylarks and other wildlife and vegetation in the surrounding area and will be working very closely with the Beacon Hill Ranger throughout the period of the work taking place so that we can take all necessary steps to protect the environment.
UPDATE 16th JUNE: Huge activity at Rottingdean Windmill today with teams working on the planned maintenance. The sweeps are being taken down and the Windmill will now be put in scaffolding for the work to continue.
The Argus: Efforts to preserve windmill praised by Chris Ward MP
Chris Ward, MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven, visited Rottingdean Windmill on Beacon Hill to see the conservation work being carried out by Rottingdean Heritage.
During the visit, Mr Ward spoke with members of Rottingdean Heritage and toured the structure to learn about its history and current restoration needs.
Chris Ward MP said: “I’d like to say a massive thank you to Rottingdean Heritage for taking the time to show me around.
“They do an outstanding job preserving an important part of our local history – and it couldn’t have been a better day to visit.
Current work includes the making and fitting of new stocks, the arms which secure the sweeps, currently being produced in Holland.
Rottingdean Heritage leads the ongoing efforts to protect and restore the historic site.
