Henry Towers Holland GM

Henry Towers Holland GM

Below is a letter we received from Carolyn Sykes:

Dear Mr Laslett,

I note from the St Margaret's Parish magazine that you and Chris Davidson have prepared a leaflet tour of the Commonwealth War Graves in Rottingdean graveyard.

As we celebrate VE Day you may be interested that my father Henry Towers Holland GM is buried there.  We probably should have added "GM" to his gravestone but didn't think about it at the time - and he probably wouldn't want it as he didn't talk much about his wartime experiences as an ARP Warden and as a Radar Scientist.

Since the gravestone photo was taken Mum's name Norah has been added to the gravestone.

He was presented with the George Medal by King George VI at Buckingham Palace on the 26th September 1941. The award was for rescuing a fellow ARP Warden during the London Blitz from a burning building – the Liverpool Victoria Sports Club in Ealing. I attach a photo of him at Buckingham Palace and some of the correspondence.

He lived for many years in Eley Crescent Rottingdean and died in 1986.

Carolyn Sykes (nee Holland)
